Twatwaffles Of The Week

And away we go.............................

Number Five:  Texas Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba who struck an umpire in the face during a heated argument about balls and strikes in a Venezuelan Winter League baseball game earlier this week.

Yorvit Torrealba Strikes Umpire During Argument

Torrelalba is well known and widely respected for playing the game with fire and passion; however, this behavior does not merely cross a line, it hurdles a line.  As the columnist in the attached link so correctly states, this was an ugly disgusting incident which will taint an otherwise stellar career.

Number Four:  A thus far unidentified individual or group of individuals who spray painted Anti-Christian/Satanic graffiti, including "666" and an inverted cross, on the garage of a Bakersfield, CA family who have prominently displayed Christian themed Christmas decorations, including a "Happy Birthday, Jesus" sign on and around their home.

Hate Graffiti Spray Painted On Home

Can't we all just get along?  Was this nation not founded on a basic principle of freedom of, and from, religion?  Can we not let everyone celebrate the religion, or lack thereof, of their choice without behaving in this type of repulsive manner?  Dear readers, when will we learn to celebrate our few differences instead of persecuting each other over them?

Number Three:  State Governments across America, who during recent budget crunches, have slashed funding for services for the mentally ill.  The end result, of course, has been a flood of mentally ill patients into emergency rooms throughout the country.

Mentally Ill Flood ERs As States Cut Services

Isn't this just par for the course, folks?  Times get tough; but instead of trying to implement difficult, deep budget cuts, state lawmakers prefer to cut services for the most misunderstood, feared, and stigmatized patients in the health care system.  Economic hardships such as job losses, foreclosures, and the like lead to an increase psychotic breaks, so the logical thing to do is cut services for the mentally ill, right?  Pitiful.  They should be ashamed of themselves.  Just once I would like to see the powerful instead of the powerless bear the brunt of the results of hard times.

Number Two:  Roy Allen Ostergren, 34, who was wanted out of Texas for aggravated assault on his common law wife. Authorities say Ostergren beat his wife with a baseball bat, wrapped a chain around her neck and dragged her behind his truck on December 12th.  He was tracked to Northern California and arrested in Oroville.

Texas Fugitive Wanted For Attacking Wife Arrested In California

As if the whole baseball bat beating, dragging behind the car thing weren't bad enough, Ostergren is also accused to of sneaking into his wife's hospital room and attacking her again while she was recovering from her injuries.  Assuming these allegations are true, you, sir, are a twatwaffle extraordinaire!

Number One:  Paul Daniel Kunzler, 34, of Taylorsville, UT, who was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of two counts of rape of a child, three counts of sodomy of a child and three counts of sexual abuse of a child.  His four-month "relationship" with a 13 year old girl was discovered after a bizarre incident at the man's house in which one of his housemates was shot by a third housemate who was reportedly trying to shoot a mouse in his kitchen with a 9mm handgun, according to investigators.

Man Shoots At Mouse And Injures Roommate While Another Roommate Is Arrested For Rape

Talk about everything happening for a reason!!!!!  Unbelievable!!!!!!  I say it week in and week out, friends and frenemies, I don't make this stuff up.  I just report it for your amazement.

Peace, Love, and Happy Holidays, my brothers and sisters.

Wanton Disregard For Human Life..............

You know what I don't understand?  I don't understand the absolute disregard for human life in this day and age.  The latest example comes to us from New York City.

Woman Burned Alive In Brooklyn Elevator; Man Arrested

No Bail For Man Accused Of Burning Woman Alive

Man Suspected Of Torching 73 Year Old Woman Charged With Murder And Arson

Neighbors Hold Vigil For Woman Burned Alive In Elevator

That's right, folks.  A 73 year old woman was burned to death in an elevator.  Burned to death.  The rationale?  According to the alleged assailant, the victim owed him $2000.  Burned to death.  Over two grand.  If anyone out there can think of a more horrific way to die, please share it because I cannot.  This woman was killed in the most bone chilling manner imaginable over a debt for doing odd jobs.

What type of animal looks another human being in the eye, douses her with fuel, and sets her alight; walking away as she screams in agony as the flames take the life from her?  Where is the regard for another human life?  Why such cruelty and barbarism?  It is bad enough that people will kill over money, but to kill in this way?  I just don't get it.

I realize that there have been examples of unspeakable evil throughout human history, but it seems to me like there are more examples in our current society.  If we don't start respecting and caring for each other as members of the human race, I fear our civilization is doomed.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Sandusky And His Attorney Equate Child Molestation With Football?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have made a point to avoid commentary on the sexual abuse allegations currently swirling around Penn State's football program, but something I saw today really struck me as unfathomable.

It seems that both Mr. Sandusky and his attorney, Joseph Amendola, are essentially equating Mr. Sandusky's impending trial with football.  Please review the attached video clips that were recorded shortly after Mr. Sandusky waived his right to a preliminary hearing this morning.

Sandusky Vows To "Fight For Four Quarters".

This Is Bigger Than Penn State vs. Miami In 1986

Yes, you heard that correctly, folks.  Mr. Sandusky is "going to fight for four quarters".  This is "bigger than Penn State versus Miami in 1986."  "This is the game of Jerry Sandusky's life."  Really?

Folks, I know that Jerry Sandusky has been a football man for his entire life.  I know that Joe Paterno and Penn State are legendary in the world of college football.  Yet, it somehow seems to trivialize the whole matter of children allegedly being raped when football analogies are used to describe defense strategy.  It just strikes me that they aren't taking what was allegedly done to these young boys seriously.

So you tell me, dear readers, am I overreacting, or do you agree with me?

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Really, Gov. Perry? President Obama Is Waging A "War On Religion"?

To paraphrase GOP messiah, Ronald Reagan, well, there they go again.................

Republican presidential hopeful, Rick Perry, recently launched a television ad bemoaning the horror at gays being allowed to serve in the military while children supposedly cannot celebrate Christmas in school.  Gov. Perry, as if on cue, then laments Mr. Obama's "war on religion".  Of course, the lapdogs that are the right wing media fell in lock step behind Perry's baseless comments.

Where to begin, dear readers?  Perhaps I should give more than passing mention to the good governor's bashing of gay soldiers.  Of course, when GOP supporters boo an openly gay solider, why am I not surprised?  Still, I digress.  Yes, indeed, Gov. Perry, why should these able bodied, patriotic Americans be allowed to serve in the military?  Could it be because this country was founded on equal opportunity and due process for all?  What a horrific prospect, Gov. Perry!!!!!  Gays and lesbians in the military!!!!  Oh, the horror.  As that old saying goes, in the heat of battle no one cares whether the solider in the foxhole next to you is gay or straight.  They just care whether you can shoot straight. What I really can't understand is why so many gay and lesbian Americans are willing to fight and possibly die for a country where bigots like Gov. Perry are viable candidates for president and for a country that won't let them marry who they love.

Ah, and yes, the mythical war against Christmas continues....................  Again, Gov. Perry, this nation was founded on inclusiveness and equality.  Is it so horrible to have "holiday" parties and such, so that the children who aren't Christians don't feel excluded?  Isn't America about being a melting pot with respect and equality for all?  The Constitution that I have studied over the years certainly leads me to think so.  By the way, this would be the same Constitution that outlines the number of justices on the Supreme Court.  Based on your previous comments, you may not be familiar with it.

Somehow, in Gov. Perry's rather convoluted mind, this equates to President Obama waging a war on religion.  Some in the right wing media even suggested that the president attended church for the first time since Easter as a direct result of Mr. Perry's inane comments.  As if there is any relevance whatsoever to the frequency with which Mr. Obama attends services.  As I often say, sitting in church doesn't make you a Christian any more than sitting in a garage makes you a car.

Interestingly, Gov. Perry, the Christianity that is practiced by President Obama appeals to me.  The Christianity that you apparently practice does not.  Perhaps that isn't God who you think is speaking to you, but someone who occupies a bit darker and (ahem) warmer locale.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Twatwaffles Of The Week

And away we go...........................

First we have a Dicknozzle of Douchebaggery:  An unidentified female California State University, Northridge student who had a meltdown in the campus library during Finals Week because some of her fellow students, in her view, were talking and breathing, yes---breathing, too loudly.

Dude, It Is Finals Week!!! Stop Breathing At The Top Of Your Lungs

Of course, the student who was irate made more noise telling everyone else how loud they were than anyone else in the library.  You know, I am a student myself.  I understand the stress and anxiety of Finals Week, but, for the love of Pete, chill out a little, will ya'?

Number Five:  An unidentified female thirteen year old Philadelphia middle school student who is currently under arrest for passing the sleep aid Ambien to some of her classmates.  Seven were sickened with two in hospital overnight.  Reports indicate that the offending student essentially had a mobile pharmacy at the school.

Thirteen Year Old Arrested After Passing Sleeping Pills To Classmates

Remember the good old days when the worst thing that school administrators had to worry about was hooligans like me smoking in the restrooms?  Also, a gold star goes to the first person who points out the grammatical error in the attached article.

Number Four:  An as of yet unidentified (We are falling into a rut, my friends.) male nurse who allegedly touched a female patient's breasts and stomach in a "sexual manner" while the young lady was in hospital for dehydration.

Former Hospital Patient Says Male Nurse Touched Her Breasts

Dear readers, I take this one personally.  Being mere weeks from earning my RN license, this really hits home.  When  one practices medicine, one has to put one's hands on members of the opposite sex, but one must maintain the utmost in professionalism and decency.  I do not wish to be too judgemental since this matter is still under investigation; but if the allegations are proven to be true, this disgrace to the honorable profession of nursing needs to lose his license for life!

Number Three:  We have a twelve way tie for number three this week, friends.  Twelve members of the Kenmore (NY) East girls varsity basketball team who routinely engaged in a racist chant in their locker room prior to their games.  It seems that in order to prepare themselves to play, they needed to chant "One, two, three, niggers!" before they took to the court.  Needless to say, the one African American member of the team was offended by this and rightfully so.  However, when she confronted her teammates, she was met with the usual "we aren't racist" nonsense that is to be expected from a community that is 97% white.  The end result of this overt bigotry as well as other taunts involving slavery, chains, shackles, and referring to Tyra Batts, the African American member of the team, as a "black piece of shit" was a fight between Batts and an offending teammate.  Batts and the other girl involved in the fight were suspended.  After investigation, the entire team was suspended due to their racist behavior.

Offensive Racist Chat Leads To Suspension Of Entire Girls Basketball Team

As I was writing this, I checked the calendar.  I'll be damned if it isn't 2011, so why are these bigots acting like it is 1962?  Sickening.  Repulsive.  Pitiful.  Hateful.  Outrageous.  The list goes on and on.  I have asked this question over and over again.  Why do racism and bigotry continue to exist?

Number Two:  We have a two way tie for second place on this week's dishonor role, Arthur Brasher and Michelle Hanks who were arrested for allegedly kicking in a Provo, UT woman's front door, entering her apartment, and hitting her with a golf club multiple times.  Provo Police Sgt. Matthew Suifanua told ABC 4 that the victim knew the suspects, who broke into her home to collect on what they claimed was a debt owed to them by the victim.

Woman Beaten With Golf Club During Home Invasion

According to media reports, the victim was not seriously injured, but it seems to me like this is another example of society having no regard for human life anymore.  I don't know how we as a species got to this point, and I have no idea how we redeem ourselves.  I wish I did, but I don't.

Number One:  Zachary Meints, 23, a youth hockey coach arrested on suspicion of Internet sexual exploitation of a child.  So far, police said they have interviewed 13 potential victims/witnesses. Five of those victims were under the age of 15 at the time the alleged exploitation, which involved inappropriate sexual messages.

Youth Coach Arrested On Internet Sexual Exploitation Charges

Is it just me, or does it seem like there are more and more pedophiles in the ranks of sports coaches, trainers, and such?  I find the whole matter to be quite disturbing.  Please implore to your children to tell a trusted adult if anyone acts in an inappropriate manner with them.  It could be the difference between a life and death.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Some Musings Regarding The "War" On Christmas

You know what I don't understand?  I don't understand the annual shrieking about the supposed "war" on Christmas that we all have to endure.  A war on Christmas?  Really?  What exactly construes this assault on Christianity's holiest day?  A main point of contention seems to be the use of the phrase "Happy Holidays".  Really?  How petty.

Yes, dear readers, I say "Happy Holidays", and I do so out of respect for not only for my Christian brothers and sisters, but also out of respect for my Jewish, Muslim, Pagan, Buddhist, Celtic, Hindu, Andean, Atheist, etc. brothers and sisters who also celebrate major holidays during this time of the year.  We live in a multi-cultural nation, folks.  Should we not be inclusive and respectful of everyone's beliefs and celebrations; not just the beliefs and celebrations of the majority religion in America?  I fail to understand why this simple fact is so difficult for some in our society to grasp.  We have a Constitutional guarantee of freedom of (and from) religion.  Why can we not respect the multitude of faiths in our country while celebrating our sameness and brotherhood as members of the human race?

What I would really like to see is all of the energy and time and money that are spent on the this supposed "war" on Christmas dedicated to charity for the poor and down trodden.  After all, Jesus ministered about charity for the poor above all.

Deuteronomy 15:7, 11
If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.

Deuteronomy 24:14Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns

Psalm 41:1-2
Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the LORD delivers him in times of trouble. The LORD will protect him and preserve his life; he will bless him in the land and not surrender him to the desire of his foes.

Proverbs 14:31
He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

Far be it for me to speak for Christ, but I think His will would be better served be following His word than by whining about a non-existent "war" on Christmas,

One of latest versions of this nonsense that is floating around social media essentially implores folks to say "Merry Christmas" because "God is welcome in (their) house".  Well, friends and frenemies, God is welcome in my house as well, but so are Allah, Vishnu, Waheguru,  Yahweh, Huwa, Gitche Manitou, Ahura Mazda,  etc.

Peace, love, and Happy Holidays, my brothers and sisters.

Herman Cain Doesn't Recall A 13 Year Affair?

You know what I don't understand?  I don't understand why politicians who have had infidelity issues seem to think they can run for office without their trysts coming to light.  Folks, I have taken a great deal of delight in lampooning former GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain, but this issue goes far deeper than him.  Gary Hart and Donna Rice.  Bill Clinton and Gennifer Flowers, Monica Lewinsky, et. al., Larry Craig and male prostitutes who cruise airport gents rooms, Mark Foley and male teenage pages.  The list is as endless as it is sordid.

I ask the question again.  Do these men think that their peccadilloes won't eventually come to light?  Was Mr. Cain really so naive at to think that Cynthia White, among others, wouldn't tell her story to the press?  Did Mr. Foley think his continuous inappropriate behavior with young male pages would never be discovered?

Do these people think they are so powerful and untouchable that no one will sell them out?  Do they think they can be in public spotlight without their personal lives being scrutinized?

With exception of those who prey on children like Mr. Foley, a part of me wonders why we care.  Seriously, do a person's personal indiscretions really have in bearing on his ability to perform the duties he was elected to perform?  In Mr. Clinton's case, he was still a successful and popular president despite his marital issues.  Is this another example of American puritanism?

Frankly, friends, I have mixed emotions about this.  What do you think?

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Twatwaffles Of The Week

And away we go..................................

Number Five:  Shawn Porter, a 32 year old Volusia County, FL man recently arrested for ordering marijuana at a Burger King drive through.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Porter and another man drove up to the Burger King on Elkcam Boulevard in Deltona about 10:30 p.m. and said they wanted a "blunt and some herbs" -- slang terms for marijuana.  The cashier said she could smell marijuana coming from the car, so she jotted down the vehicle's tag number and description and called the Sheriff's Office.

Man Arrested For Ordering Weed At A Burger King Drive Through

Talk about having it "your way".  Hey, man, can I get a Whopper meal and......................uh......................a dime bag of grass?  Unbelievable.

Number Four:  Oakland Raiders linebacker Roland McClain arrested for all sorts of assault charges, with the kicker being that he held a handgun next to a man's head and fired it off right next to his ear. Along with that, McClain was arrested for discharging a firearm inside city limits, third-degree assault, menacing and reckless endangerment after being given time off by the team to attend his grandfather's funeral.

The San Francisco Chronicle has the details ...
The victim, whose name was not released, told police that he got into a fight with Jerradius Willingham Wednesday night. The victim told police who had responded to the call that he crawled to his car after the fight, and then McClain put a gun to his head while he was lying on the ground, police said.
"The victim reported that he begged McClain not to shoot him," a police news release said, "and that McClain took the gun away from his head, held it next to his ear and fired it."
Raider Linebacker Arrested On Gun Charges

First, a Doug Disclaimer.....................I am a HUGE Oakland Raiders fan and have been since early childhood.  That being said, this type of behavior is abominable!!!  McClain is being paid a king's ransom to play a boys game, and he acts in this type of way?  I grow increasingly annoyed with professional athletes, especially NFL and NBA player, who seem to think that they are above the law.  You are grown men, making huge sums of money, living in posh homes, and driving exclusive cars.  You aren't gangsters.  Grow up, and act like the adults you supposedly are.

Number Three:  An unidentified Franklin County, PA man who robbed a wheelchair bound Salvation Army bell ringer

Bell Ringer In Wheelchair Robbed

come under fire for failing to properly discipline the other players who were allegedly involved; the Eagle-Tribune reported on Tuesday that two of the players who have been accused of leading the hazing incident were allowed to try out for the basketball team on Monday, an act which would directly contravene Andov
You read it correctly, friends. This twatwaffle stole a donation kettle from a wheelchair bound bell ringer. A. Wheelchair. Bound. Bell. Ringer. I realize that all of the dirtbags come out of the woodwork during this time of year, but this is a new low, isn't it?

Number Two: David Fazio head coach of the Andover (MA) high school basketball team, some of whom's members have been implicated in a disgusting hazing incident last summer.
According to the Andover Eagle-Tribune, two of the team's younger players were coaxed into participating in a "game" called ookie cookie, where one of the players was forced to eat an Oreo cookie covered in semen. One of the students who reported the incident was among the two forced to play the game, while the other who was hazed has reportedly transferred to another school.
The Andover head basketball coach, Fazio, allegedly reported the incident as soon as he learned of it, alerting authorities as early as Nov. 11 of a potential hazing within his team. Still, he has since er Public School policy which alleges that all students involved in hazing will face levels of discipline that vary from suspension to expulsion.

Basketball Hazing Incident Sparks Outrage

What the hell should I say about this, friends and frenemies?  It is sick.  It is twisted,  It is demented.  Whatever happened to making the freshmen wash the upperclassman's jocks?  Things that used to be relatively innocent have morphed into repulsive things like this.  I just don't understand it.

Number One:  A small Kentucky church has chosen to ban marriages and even some worship services for interracial couples. The Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, located in Pike County, made the vote in response to a longtime member who is engaged to a man whose birthplace is in Zimbabwe,    The small congregation, which usually hosts about 40 members each Sunday, held the vote after longtime member Stella Harville, brought her fiancé Ticha Chikuni to church with her in June. The couple performed a song together at the church in which Chikuni sang "I Surrender All," while Harville played the piano.  Chikuni, 29, who works at Georgetown College, is black--and Harville, who was baptized at the church but is not an active member, is white. Dean Harville, Stella's father, said he was told by the church's former pastor Melvin Thompson that his daughter and her fiancé were not allowed to sing at the church again. However, Thompson recently stepped down and the church's new pastor, Stacy Stepp, said the couple was once again welcome to sing.

Kentucky Church Bans Interracial Marriage

I say it week in and week out......................  I don't make this stuff up.  I just report it.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Another Bullied Teen Dead

Well, dear readers, I have been on a bit of a self-imposed hiatus due to the death of my father as well as having to devote a great deal of time to my studies.  However, a recent tragedy in my home state of Indiana has prompted me to speak out again.  It is my intention, at this point, to add new posts to this site at least three times per week for the foreseeable future.

In October of 2010, fourteen year old Jamarcus "Marcus" Bell hung himself after enduring constant taunts about his race, his perceived homosexuality, and his emotional problems.  As you will see from the attached links, there were many issues that need to addressed here.

Indiana Teens Suicide Raises Questions About Bullying

Did School District Miss Bullied Teen's Cries For Help?

Superintendent Says School Acted To Prevent Bullying

Folks, here is another teen who was mercilessly tormented by his classmates.  And why?  Because he was black?  Because he was assumed to be gay?  Because he had mental health issues?  A combination thereof?  Why do any of these things matter?

I am not even going to address whether the school district can be held culpable in this young man's death.  I shall leave that up to the attorneys.  Instead, I should like to address the issue of bullying those perceived to be "different" or "weak".

I realize this is a long time problem.  I myself was bullied from time to time, especially during my middle school years.  Yes, I was a bit of a nerd, but that didn't justify the behavior of the bullies.  The result of my boorish treatment is the strong, opinionated, confident person that I am today.  Fortunately, I had a core group of really good friends that served as a support network for me.  Unlike young Mr. Bell, I never considered suicide, but that doesn't mean that the emotional pain wasn't real.

My question, dear readers, is this.  Why do people (and make no mistake about it, this type of behavior is NOT isolated to teenagers) behave like this?  If they are so ignorant and immature that they have issues with minorities, gays, bookworms, and so on, why can't they just be left alone?  Why must certain groups be singled out for torment and harassment?  Are the bullies so emotionally and mentally weak that they have to somehow redeem themselves by pouring milk all over the girl who is "too school for cool's" lunch tray?  Do they have to prove their worth by throwing pieces of metal at a black kid, who may or may not have been gay, as they did to Jamarcus Bell?  Must they hurl insults and slurs at those who they think are inferior to them?

Why does this continue, and, more importantly, why aren't concrete steps being taken to stop it?  In the age old question, where are the parents?  Yes, teachers and school administrators can play a huge role in preventing the next Jamarcus Bell, but children are conditioned by their parents to behave in certain ways.  Why don't parents and other responsible adults intervene when they observe bullying, and why aren't cases of bullying investigated more thoroughly?  As you read in the attached articles, Jamarcus Bell endured years of bullying, yet virtually nothing was done to stop, and punish, the bullies.

This is my plea to the responsible adults and teenagers out there.  First, make a pledge to not engage in this type of behavior yourself.  Also, if you witness bullying, step in to stop it, even if your own child is engaging in bullying.  Take all reports of bullying seriously.  Don't just accept bullying as a rite of passage.  I guess in a nutshell what I am asking you to do is stand up to bullying in all of its forms.  Will you stand with me against this scourge on society?  I sincerely hope you will.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Twatwaffles Of The Week

And away we go.....................................

Number Five:  Green Bay Packers linebacker AJ Hawk who took it upon himself to display his middle finger toward his own bench after sacking St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford last Sunday.

Hawk Flies The Bird

On the other hand, was it an obscene gesture?  It could also equal the number of sacks Hawk has had in the past two years.

Number Four:  Chivas midfielder, Marco Fabian, who after scoring his third goal in a 5-2 win over Tecos in a Mexican Premiere Division football (soccer) match, staged a mock execution of teammate Alberto Medina in "celebration".

Marco Fabian Stages A Mock Execution To Celebrate A Goal

While this action would not be funny or acceptable anywhere, in a nation that suffered 15,000 recorded murders last year, it is unconscionable.

Number Three:  Susan Sarandon who recently referred to Pope Benedict XVI as a "Nazi".

Susan Sarandon Calls The Pope "Nazi"

You know, folks, I do advocate for freedom of expression, and Ms. Sarandon has every right in the world to call the pope, or any of the rest of us, anything she likes.  However, my concern is that the careless use of Nazi allegations, accusations, and analogies serves to lessen the horror the Third Reich and the Holocaust.

Number Two:  Minnesota Vikings cornerback Chris Cook, who has been charged with two counts of domestic assault.  Details of Cook's arrest are not currently available.

Vikings CB Charged With Domestic Assault

I hate to be too accusatory about this when the man has just been charged, but he is being held without bail.  I can only assume the incident was serious in order to warrant that type of action by the judge.  So.................I've said it before, and I'll say it again.................  NEVER, EVER PUT YOUR HANDS ON A WOMAN OR A CHILD IN ANGER!!!!!!!!!

Number One:  We have a three way tie for the top spot of dishonor this week, friends.  The top twatwaffles in this installment are:  Thomas Gregory, 47, Eddie Wright, 49, and Linda Ann Weston, 51 of Philadelphia, who are alleged to have held four mentally disabled people in a filthy basement with no food and a bucket for a toilet.  It is thought that the captives' social security checks were being stolen by the alleged perpetrators.  The crime is now thought to extend well beyond the City of Philadelphia.

Mentally Disabled Held In Dungeon

Anyone who reads this column, knows me personally, or both will attest to the fact that one of my biggest causes, along with gay rights and first amendment issues, is the exploitation of the weak by the strong.  This case is textbook example of just that, and I find it utterly repulsive.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Pat Robertson Promotes Lies About Mental Illness

You know what I don't understand?  I don't understand why Pat Robertson insists on telling the same old lies about mental illness, specifically depression. News reports today discussed a large increase in the use of antidepressant medication in the United States.

Large Upswing In Anti-Depressant Use In America

Is this good news or bad?  Is this healthy?  Well, those would be logical question to ask, and one would hope that a fact based thoughtful discussion would ensue.  It would seem that "fact based" and "logical" are beyond Robertson's grasp.

Observe:

Robertson Blame Rise In Antidepressant Use On People Not Believing In God

Where shall we begin?

Lie:  We will take a Prozac and share a "happy moment".

Fact:  Antidepressants are not "happy pills".  Antidepressants effect brain chemicals, specifically serotonin and norepinephrine, in order to assist people suffering from depression from experiencing the severe, persistent low moods and sadness that can be crippling enough to affect the person's ability to function in both personal and work settings.  They do not prevent normal sadness and anger.  They do not prevent a person from feeling anything at all, and they most assuredly are NOT happy pills.

Lie:  The message is "stay stoned".

Fact:  One does not get "stoned" on antidepressants.  They do not have intoxicating effects.  They are not narcotics, nor are they street drugs or alcohol.  When they are prescribed, it is to build them to a therapeutic level in order to achieve the desired outcome as outlined above.

Side Note:  "What are some other antidepressants?  I don't know."

You obviously don't know anything about depression or the medications used to treat it either.

Lie:  Having "blessings" is a reason not to suffer from depression.

Fact:  Depression, nay, mental illness as a whole, affects people from all walks of life from all around the world.  One can realize that one has a good life and still be depressed.  Depression is not flawed thinking, nor is it a refusal to understand that one has positive things in one's life.  Indeed, it is an imbalance in chemicals within the brain.  It is oblivious as to whom it afflicts.

Lie:  To paraphrase, if you don't have God in your life, you have no hope; and that is what leads to depression.

Fact:  Mental illness does not care if one is pious, a heathen, or something in between.  The most devout can suffer from mental illness just as the most ardent non-believers.  Wealth, social status, education, religious affiliation, gender, race, sexual orientation, or anything else of this nature has no bearing on the likelihood of having a mental disorder.  No one suggests that cancer strikes those who don't believe in God more that those who do because it doesn't.  Mental illness is exactly the same.

Lie:  "They use this term 'self-medicating'".

Fact:  Self-medicating occurs when someone uses a substance (ie alcohol or OTC medication) to try to alter the way one feels.  One gets antidepressants by prescription only.  By definition, this is NOT self-medication.

Friends, mental illness has, for hundreds of years, carried a stigma.  The mentally ill were thought to be possessed by Satan or demons.  They were locked into what were essentially dungeons and subjected to unspeakable abuse and maltreatment.  They were subjected to ice baths, shock treatments, straitjackets, isolation, lobotomies, and inhumane restraints.  The mentally ill were thought to be morally weak or criminal.  They were thought to merely be seeking attention or using "insanity" as an excuse to commit offenses against society.

Mental illness is no different from physical illness.  It strikes without warning.  It doesn't care about your lot in life.  It is not a source of shame or embarrassment.  It is not an effort to seek attention or an excuse for bad behavior.  It is an illness.  Nothing more, nothing less.

Sadly, Robertson's comments only go to further the stigma and negative baseless stereotypes.  His remarks could be dismissed on face value if he did not have thousands of followers who believe his every word, no matter how inane.  We must treat the mentally ill with unconditional positive regard.  We must not believe the nonsense that is being promoted by Pat Robertson.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Limbaugh Shows His Ignorance Again

You know what I don't understand?  I don't understand how Rush Limbaugh can continue to show his ignorance of the world around him, but continues to have untold thousands of followers.  I present for your approval the latest example.

Recently, President Obama ordered 100 US troops into Central Africa for the express purpose of assisting in the capture of the Lord's Resistance Army's (LRA) leader Joseph Kony.

US Troops To Assist In Seeking LRA Leader Kony

The LRA is well known for committing atrocities such as mass murder, mutilation, rape as a weapon, and conscripting child soldiers in and around Uganda for well over 20 years.

LRA Background

Here are some examples of their handiwork:

For the record, these were some of the less graphic images available.

It would seem that the LRA and their barbarousness are well known to everyone except Limbaugh as he defended the LRA and essentially told his listeners that President Obama was sending troops to Africa to "kill Christians".

Limbaugh Defends LRA

Limbaugh Listeners Defend LRA

Really, Rush?  Are you so clueless about what is happening in Africa that you actually believe what you said, or you just that desperate to disparage President Obama, who really doesn't need any help in looking badly of late?  Yes, the LRA professes to be Christian, just like al Qaida profess to be Muslim, but neither is a true representation of their respective faiths.  Are you so blind to what is actually happening in Central Africa that you use this issue to unjustly criticize the president?  Are your listeners so clueless that they believe the nonsense that you spewed over this matter?

Perhaps, Rush, a better thing to do would have been to explain to your audience that the LRA is not representative of Christianity, that they are criminals and barbarians, and that as the moral compass that we fancy ourselves, America should play a role in eradicating this vermin from the planet.  There is a time and a place for partisan politics, but this is not it.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Remembering Dan Wheldon

As most of you know, two time Indianapolis 500 champion, Dan Wheldon was killed in a horrific crash during the IndyCar Las Vegas 300 on Sunday.

Dan Wheldon Dies In Fiery IndyCar Crash

Dan Wheldon Remembered

True race fans are fully aware of the danger inherent to the sport.  For the record, by "true race fans", I am not referring to those who attend the Indy 500 for no reasons but to see how much beer they can drink and how obnoxious they can be.  Indeed, I am referring to those of us who attend races, watch races on television, follow the championships, and who know and respect the drivers.  Despite the massive improvements in safety over the past 30 to 35 years that I have followed this sport, the risks involved in strapping oneself into a guided missile with wheels, some of which are capable of speeds in excess of 300 mph (483 km/h), are always in the back of everyone's minds from the fans to the crew members to the officials to the drivers themselves.

That being said, events like those that took Dan from us far too soon are still shocking and sobering.  I read a clip earlier that said "Everyone in IndyCar died a little with Dan".  Dare I take this sentiment further and say that every race fan worldwide died a little bit as well?  The world of motorsport is a little darker, and it was a black day indeed.

As for me, I cheered Wheldon when he took car owner Michael Andretti to Victory Lane at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  It was the first time an Andretti had been in Victory Lane since 1969, and Wheldon went on the win the IRL championship this season.  I rooted against him when he drove for rival Chip Ganassi, but the respect and admiration never waned. I cheered him again when he captured his second Indy 500 this May. He raced hard.  He raced clean.  In a sport known for prima dona drivers and cookie cutter interviews, Wheldon was a breath of fresh air and a man who always  took time to genuinely interact with fans, myself included.  He was a class act.

Racing lost a true champion and a good man.  A young family lost its husband and father.

Dan, please give our love and respect to Ayrton, Roland, Gilles, Mark, Ricardo, Wolfgang, Gordon, Jovy, Scott, Jeff, Greg, Tony, Paul, Bill, Pat, Eddie, Swede, Jerry, Adam, Clifford, Dale, Kenny, Neil, Davey, and countless others.  Like them, you will be missed, but never forgotten.  Rest In Peace, Dan Wheldon.

Godspeed.

Twatwaffles Of The Week

And away we go..................................

Number Five:  An unidentified Eastern European man who decided he would get out of a speeding ticket by claiming police brutality after punching himself in the face.

Man Claims Police Brutality After Punching Himself

There was only one problem with this brilliant plan.  He was being video taped while sitting in the police cruiser.  Utterly amazing.

Number Four:  An unidentified man who repeatedly stabbed a New Haven, CT tattoo artist because the assailant was unhappy was the work the tattoo artist did on his girlfriend.  The tattoo artist escaped and was treated for minor injuries.

Tattoo Artist Stabbed Over Alleged Shoddy Work

I know that tattoos are supposedly forever, but so are lengthy prison sentences.  Perhaps a better plan of action would have been to sue the artist for the money to pay for a cover tattoo from another artist versus trying to kill the guy.  Just a thought......................

Number Three:  Catholic Bishop Robert W. Finn of the Kansas City-St. Joseph diocese, who along with the diocese itself, have been indicted by a grand jury on a charge of failure to report suspected child abuse by a priest.  The prosecution alleges that Finn "had reasonable cause to suspect a child may be subjected to abuse" by Father Shawn Ratigan, a priest from Independence, Missouri, who was indicted in August on 13 counts related to child pornography. Finn "had reasonable cause to suspect a child may be subjected to abuse due to previous knowledge of concerns about Father Ratigan and children".  The reasonable cause allegedly includes pornographic photos of underage females.

Kansas City Bishop Indicted On Child Endangerment Charges

You know, the faithful often say that they separate their religion from the flawed humans who practice it, and that does make sense.  That being said, how does a man of the cloth rationalize having this type of knowledge about a member of his diocese and not notifying the authorities?  The Catholic Church has taken a well deserved savage beating over this issue during the past several years, and this is one more blow.  Disgraceful.

Number Two:  We have a tie for number two on the dishonor roll this week, folks:   Ausar Allah-El and Serenity Sol-El who were recently arrested in New Orleans on charges relating to abducting their now five year old son two years ago after losing custody of him in Los Angeles.  The boy was found undernourished and weighing 38 pounds, Los Angeles County authorities said Tuesday.  He and his parents are believed to have been living on the streets in New Orleans.

Five Year Old CA Boy Found Malnourished Two Years After Abduction

The parents had lost custody of their son after Los Angeles County officials made "repeated attempts" to help the parents care for their son and found the boy suffering "from numerous medical conditions that could have been prevented with the proper care and medication," the statement said.

"His parents refused to provide the child with necessary medical appointments, dental exams, occupational therapists and ophthalmology appointments," the statement said.

Asked why the parents allegedly did this, Parker said, "Apparently, they have some type of belief that affects what they feed him and what type of medical care that they will allow him to receive."

Ladies and gentlemen, my view is that freedom to believe what you like ends when you endanger your child.  Agreed?

Number One:  Charlie Post, 33, of Lower Burrell, PA, who gunned down police Patrolman Derek Kotecki outside a local Diary Queen.  Kotecki was dispatched to the area to apprehend Post after he fired shots at his boss at a local motel earlier this month.  Post was also killed in the incident, but it is unclear if he took his own life or was killed by responding officers.

Police Officer Killed Outside Dairy Queen

It sounds like the shooter had mental health issues, and that certainly needs to be taken into consideration.  However, there is nothing more tragic that a public servant losing his life in the line of duty.  Please keep the officer's family and friends in your thoughts.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Is There No Respect For Human Life Anymore?

You know what I don't understand?  I don't understand what seems to an utter lack of regard for human life in this day and age.  Just from today's news, I have four examples of what I mean.

Home Invasion Mastermind Found Guilty

Custody Battle May Have Led To Shooting Rampage

Body Of 6 Week Old Infant Found In Woods

Body Found At Waste Facility

Now that you have read these articles, dear readers, and are sufficiently disgusted, do you see my point?  I realize that humans have killed each other since the beginning of time, but am I alone in thinking that the crimes are more frequent and more horrific than in the past?  Do we no longer have respect for the gift of life?  It almost seems like our species has become desensitized to violence and death.  It as if murder has been glamorized, and the killers try to be as cruel as possible.

How did we get here, ladies and gentlemen?  What has happened to our society?  What has happened to us as human beings?  As for me, I feel that the continued focus of so many people on themselves, and themselves only, with no regard to others or others' feelings.  What do you think, friends?

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Before You Pass Judgement........................

Pray don't find fault with the man that limps or stumbles along the road unless you have worn the shoes he wears or struggled beneath his load.

There may be tacks in his shoes that hurt though hidden from away from view or the burden he bears, placed on his back, might cause you to stumble too.

Don't sneer at the man who is down today unless you have felt the blow that caused his fall or felt the shame that only the fallen know.

You may be strong but still the blows that were his if dealt to you in the selfsame way at the selfsame time might cause you to stagger too!

Don't be too harsh with the man that sins or pelt him with word or stone unless you are sure--yea, doubly sure--that you have no sins of your own.

For you know, perhaps, if the tempter's voice should whisper as soft to you as it did to him when he went astray it might cause you to falter too.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Is Scott Brown A Male Chauvinist?

The latest kerfuffle emerging from the highly entertaining 2012 election year involves a spat between incumbent Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) and Democratic frontrunner Elizabeth Warren.  In 1982, Sen. Brown posed nude for Cosmopolitan magazine and used the proceeds to help pay for his education.  During a recent debate among the Democratic contenders to face Brown in November, a question was asked regarding how the potential challengers paid for their education in light of Brown baring all 29 years ago.  Much to the delight of the crowd, Ms. Warren responded that she "kept her clothes on".  After hearing of Warren's remark, Brown later retored, "Thank God."

Brown and Warren Spar Over Nude Photo Shoot

Was Sen. Brown's comment in bad taste?  Certainly so.  Is he a male chauvinist?  I find that highly unlikely.  To me, this was an off the cuff quip that most likely does not reflect any sexist attitudes on Brown's behalf.  (For the record, I have no issue with his posing nude either.)

However, I think this speaks to a deeper issue.  Why in 21st Century America are we still basing our opinions and forming judgements of women based on their appearance?  There is an old saying that basically says that men will listen to other men and then decide if they like what they hear, but men will look at a woman and decide if they like what they see before paying any attention at all to what she says.  I can't tell you how many times my criticism of Sarah Palin has been greeted with "Yeah, but she's hot" from my male readers.  Are we to base our opinions of Ms. Palin, or any other female in the public eye, on her sex appeal?  Have we not progressed beyond this type of Neanderthal thinking?

The fact of the matter is this, friends and frenemies.  Women are equal members of our society from the boardroom to the hallowed chambers of government to Wall Street to Main Street.  They deserve respect, dignity, appreciation, and equal opportunity.  What they do not deserve is to be judged in any way on their physical attributes.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Twatwaffles Of The Week

And away we go.............................

First, my friends, we have a Dicknozzle Of Douchebaggery:  The suits that control the New York Yankees who recently suspended long time (35 years) beer vendor (yes, you read that correctly BEER VENDOR), Steve Lazarus for engaging in some playful banter with Boston Red Sox, and former Yankee, pitcher, Alfredo Aceves.  Lazarus was accused of "harassing" Aceves and was escorted from Yankee Stadium as if he had engaged in criminal activity.

New York Yankee Beer Vendor Punished For Joking With Red Sox Pitcher

Folks, I love the Yankees, and I HATE the Red Sox.  I understand this is one of the greatest, most heated rivalries in professional sports; but for the love of Pete, they punished a beer vendor for cracking a joke with an opposing player, who I should note played along with the joke like a good sport.  Unbelievable.

Number Five:  Former Vice-President Dick Cheney who recently said that the Obama administration owed the Bush administration "an apology" for their criticism of the Bush administration for their conduct after 9/11.

Cheney Says Obama Owes Bush Administration An Apology

How about this, Mr. Vice-President?  Those of us, myself included, who routinely criticised you and President Bush will apologize to you as soon as you apologize for trampling the Constitution, ignoring civil rights, and invading the wrong country.  Fair enough?

Number Four:  An unidentified 16 year old Ohio high school football player who is alleged to have placed a tack in his glove and subsequently punctured the hands of 27 opposing players during the traditional post game handshake.  The victims all received tetanus shots after the incident.

Football Player Pricks The Hands Of Opposing Players

Dear readers, this has to be one of the most disturbing acts of an individual "athlete" that I have seen in years.  Not only did the offending player not even play in the game, but the fact that his act also tarnished the cherished tradition of showing sportsmanship and appreciation to your opponents after a game only makes it that much more repulsive.

Number Three:  Dr. Robert Jeffress, the pastor of a Dallas megachurch, who showed the religious tolerance that the Christian Right in this country is so well known for when he stated that Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a Mormon, is in a "cult" while endorsing Texas Governor Rick Perry's run for the Republican presidential nomination.  In his defense, Perry did say that he doesn't believe that Romney is a cultist; but since Jeffress has made this statement before, I don't see how Perry could have been surprised.

Pastor Who Endorsed Perry Say Romney Is In A Cult

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have studied quite a bit of Constitutional Law at the university level, and I have yet to find the part that requires the president to be a Christian.  What I did find, however, was the First Amendment, which guarantees religious freedom in the nation.  While the same amendment protects Jeffress' statement, and while I will defend his right to say it to my dying breath; comments like his only go to inflame the religious bigotry and intolerance shown by the Christian Right in America.  It is counterproductive and intolerant.  This country was founded on the right to religious freedom, and the religious right must not be allowed to erode this fundamental right of every citizen.

Number Two:  In another example of religious bigotry, a Southwest airlines crew who removed Irum Abbasi, a Muslim woman, from a flight to San Jose when a crew member thought she said "It is a go" into her cell phone.  She actually said, "I've got to go."  As if this weren't bad enough, after the TSA cleared Abbasi to fly, Southwest would not let her reboard the flight because a crew member was "uncomfortable" having her on the plane.  Perhaps a better solution would have been to leave the uncomfortable crew member behind.

Muslim Woman Removed From Flight Sues Southwest Airlines

Lest we forget that Southwest also removed film director Kevin Smith from a flight for being "too fat" and Green Day frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, because his pants were "saggy".  But, hey, they don't charge bag fees!!!!  Seriously, folks, do we really think anyone who wasn't wearing traditional Islamic clothing would have been treated this way for such an innocuous incident?  I think not.  I understand that Muslim extremists (key word) were responsible for the 9/11 attacks.  I also understand that mainstream Muslims were not.  It is too bad that Southwest doesn't understand this as well.

Number One:  Duewa Lee , 35, of Sacramento, CA, who has been charged with ten counts of endangering the life or health of a child, and one count of torture for allegedly beating her 12 year old step-daughter as well as burning her with an iron and using a stapler on her ears.

Woman Accused Of Torturing 12 Year Old Girl

I say it week in and week out folks.  I don't make this stuff up.  I just report it.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

The Death Of An Icon

Let me see if I have this straight.  Steve Jobs, may he rest in peace, created overpriced toys for adults who have a cornucopia of everything, and his untimely death is greeted by banner headlines, breaking news updates, a massive amount of media attention, social media websites filled with expressions of grief, and mourning usually set aside for an elder statesman or revered religious leader.

Meanwhile, Rev. Fred J. Shuttlesworth, a civil rights icon, who was bombed, beaten, repeatedly arrested, and hailed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., passed away Wednesday, and his death barely registers a blip in the media, on the Internet, or in the blogospere.

Rev. Shuttlesworth Biography

What does that say about who we in America consider to be heroes?  What does this say about our priorities in this country?  While I agree that Mr. Jobs was a brilliant, innovated, upstanding, and passionate man; does he warrant more accolades than a man who put his life on the line on a day to day, hour to hour, basis to fight for African American equality?  I think not, and I think it speaks volumes about how shallow, historically ignorant, self-centered, and self-absorbed American society really is.

RIP, Rev. Shuttlesworth.  You are in a far better place now, and your legacy will live on forever.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Does The Calendar Control What You Wear?

You know what I don't understand?  I don't understand why, on a gorgeous, sunny 75F (24C) day in West Lafayette, IN, I observed people wearing jackets and sweaters.  Mind you, this was in the middle of the afternoon when it was wonderfully warm and sunny.  Why in heaven's name would someone wear a jacket and/or sweater?  Is it because the calendar says "October"?  The thermometer still says 75F (24C).

I just don't get that.  Is 75F (24C) cooler in October than in June because I will be you good money that these same people would have been wearing shorts and T-shirts if this were spring instead of fall?  Of course, I've seen people wear sweatshirts inside a 70F (22C) office because it is cold outside.  It is cold outside, but it is still warm in the office.  Why wear a sweatshirt inside in the winter when you wear a short sleeve shirt in the same office in the summer?  I've yet to see anyone freeze to death during their five minute walk from the car to the building.  Humans truly are odd creatures, aren't they?

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

How Much Public Affection Is Too Much?

A few days ago, Leisha Hailey, who stars in the American cable TV network Showtime's drama "The L Word", was thrown off a Southwest Airlines flight for kissing her unidentified girlfriend.

Lesbian Actress Removed From Southwest Airlines Flight

"L Word" Star Booted From Flight After Kiss

This made me think about a couple of things.  First, as a frequent air traveler, I can't begin to describe the unseemly activities in which I have seen fellow fliers engage on airliners.  Among other (ahem) "interesting" things, I have seen couples engaging in deep kissing, performing mysterious acts under blankets, and going into lavatories together.

My question to you, dear readers, is two fold.  Item the first:  How much public affection do you think is too much, be it on a plane, a train, or a public place?  Item the second:  Do you think the fact that Ms. Hailey was being affectionate with a same sex partner played into her fellow passengers, and possibly Southwest Airlines, negative reaction to their kissing?  Did Ms. Hailey's reaction to the complaint exacerbate the situation?

My opinions, and they are just that---MY opinions, are that anything beyond handholding, some low key cuddling, and an occasional peck on the lips is unacceptable on an airplane.  These are closed places.  It isn't like a public park where others can merely pass by the behavior.  I really feel like behavior more intimate than this needs to be kept in the privacy of a hotel room or a home.  If folks can't control their urges for the duration of a flight, perhaps they should have stayed home.

As far as the reaction being more negative because this was a same sex couple, I would really like to think that in 21st Century America, we are used to seeing two women kiss, two men hold hands, etc., but I have my doubts that all of society shares my view on this.  (On a related note, I should like to state that the opinion in the paragraph above applies to opposite sex and same sex couples.)  Still, can we not allow same sex couples to tastefully display affection for each other in public places?

I can also understand why Ms. Hailey would have reacted defensively to being singled out for her behavior, but doesn't becoming aggressive or confrontational only make the problem worse and set the case of gay equality back instead of moving it forward?

I should very much like to know your thoughts and opinions, friends.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

How Do I Maintain A Positive Outlook?

How do I maintain a positive outlook?  This is a question I am frequently asked especially when people learn how much death, destruction, and sickness I see on a first hand basis.  Really, the answer isn't all that difficult, and I hope you will find it helpful regardless of your chosen profession.  The following things help me keep my head up and keep me going forward.  I hope they will help you as well.

Treat others with unconditional positive regard.  This essentially means giving others the respect and dignity that all humans deserve regardless of their race, religion (or lack thereof), gender, sexual orientation, politics, or nation of origin and regardless if they are mentally or physically ill, if they follow societal norms for hygiene and grooming, if they are homeless, etc.  (Yes, I know I sometimes fail in this endeavour, but it isn't for lack of trying.)

Practice random acts of kindness.

Practice random acts of generosity.

Give to charity.

Help the less fortunate.

Stand up for who you are, what you are, and what you believe in.

Be honest.

Do good work.

Lend a helping hand to a person in need.

Spend time with those about whom you care and who care about you; don't waste time on those who don't.

Do not engage in battles of wits with unarmed people.

And lastly.........................

Treat others the way you would want them to treat you.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Twatwaffles Of The Week

And away we go...................................

Number Five:  An unidentified hockey fan from London, Ontario, who took it upon himself or herself to chuck a banana peel at Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds during the Flyers neutral site exhibition game versus Detroit on 22 Sep 11.  The apparently racist incident took place while Simmonds, who is African-Canadian, was in the middle of his shootout attempt.  Simmonds showed the class that NHL players are known for when discussing the incident after the Flyers ultimately fell to the Wings 4-3:

"When you're a black man playing in a predominantly white man's sport, you've got to come to expect things like that," Simmonds said. "Over the past 23 years of my life, I've come to expect some things like that. But I'm older and more mature now, I kind of just left things roll off [my back]. I try not to think about stuff like that."

"Fan" Throws Banana Peel At Black NHL Player

Well, folks, is this 1961 or 2011?  Why, in this day and age, would someone choose to act like this much of a cad?  If you have this much of an issue with black folks, do me a favor and stay home from the rink.  The vast majority of hockey fans, myself included, don't behave like this, but your inane action will make all of us look bad.  Pathetic.  I don't for a second believe that this incident was not racial in nature; but even in the outside chance that it wasn't, does this buffoon have no idea how seriously a player could be injured if he fell over a banana peel (or any other debris) on the ice?  I say again, pathetic.

Number Four:  Ranchhodbhai Lakha, 61, of Alpharetta, Georgia who was recently sentenced to six months in prison for sexually assaulting a a sleeping 20 year old female passenger on a Dallas to Atlanta light in 2010.  The victim awoke to find Lakha touching her below the waist.  She told him to stop after removing his hand, after which he, like any good pervert, did it again.  He was reported to a flight attendant and arrested when the plane arrived in Atlanta.

"Man" Gets Six Months For Sexually Assaulting Sleeping Airline Passenger

One of life's unanswered questions, amis.  Why do certain men think women are nothing more than their sexual playthings?  I just don't get it.

Number Three:  We have a group award for number three on our list this week.  The dishonor goes to the crowd at the Republican presidential debate in Orlando, FL on 22 Sep 11, who loudly booed an openly gay American solider who asked former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum if he would reinstate the recently repealed "Don't Ask; Don't Tell" policy regarding gay troops in the US military.

Republicans Boo US Soldier

That's right, dear readers, those high and mighty, incredibly patriotic citizens known as Republicans booed, BOOED, a member of the US military serving in Iraq.  You will recall that this is where the unjust, illegal, immoral war was stared by their fellow Republican, George W. Bush.  This young man, who happens to be gay, is putting his life on the line day in and day out to defend this country, and these lowlifes have the audacity to boo him for asking a perfectly acceptable question of Santorum regarding DATD??

Let me explain something here, friends, REAL Americans appreciate and respect all members of our military, regardless of their sexual orientation and regardless of our opinion on the wars that Bush started.  May I also take this opportunity to remind you, dear readers, that these are the same people who continuously question liberals and President Obama's dedication to, and love for, this country while they behave in such an atrocious manner?  They should be ashamed.  I am sure they are not, but they bloody well should be.

A Dicknozzle of Douchbaggery goes to right wing zealot Santorum for his rambling attempt to defend DADT by babbling about sex in the military and "social experimentation".  (Will someone please tell me what "social experimentation" is?)

Santorum Rambles About Gay Members Of The Military

First of all, this isn't about sex, although Lord knows conservatives have more sexual hangups than Carter has liver pills,  It is about equal rights.  Should a married military couple not have sex, Mr. Santorum?  Should two heterosexual members of the military who develop romantic feelings for each other not engage in a sexual relationship if both parties decide that is what they want to do?  Ridiculous.  This is not about sex, sir, this is about gay and lesbian Americans who wish to serve their country, and you would deny them that opportunity merely because they are gay?  Or would is be okay if they served as long as they didn't have sex?  You, sir, are a disgrace to this great nation and to your party.

Number Two:  Ethel Fay Hampton, 40, of Las Cruces, NM, who was arrested on suspicion of negligent child abuse, along with her brother Rex Earl Hampton, 45, after police discovered Ethel Hampton's 22 month old son living in a house infested with cockroaches and spiders.  The squalid home was also reported to have an overwhelming stench of cat urine and feces.  The baby appeared to be suffering from insect and spider bites. and, along with Ethel Hampton's other children, is in state custody.

Children Found In Filthy, Roach Infested Home

Why, ladies and gentlemen, do people allow their children to live in filth?  The child has no say in the matter, and I am always disturbed by those who don't keep their children safe.  It is one thing to not adhere to what is considered the societal norm.  It is quite another to put your children at risk for disease and possible death.

Number One:  Muriel Keer, 39, of Denver, CO, who is currently under investigation for child abuse resulting in death of her infant son.  Ten month-old Aldrich Leathers was found floating in an overflowing bathtub by a man living in Keer's home.  The baby died after being rushed to hospital.  And what was Keer doing while her baby was drowning?  "Working" on a computer in her kitchen.  Lovely.

"Mom" Was On Computer When Baby Was Found Dead In Bathtub

Every week, I say it, folks.  I don't make this stuff up.  I just report it.

Peace and love, my brothers and sisters.

Gay Teen Provoked His Own Murder????

You know what I don't understand?  I don't understand why well known anti-gay activist, Randy Thomasson of Save California, recently suggested that a teenage homosexual, who was murdered by a classmate, provoked his own killing.  No, I am not making this up.  I wish I were, but I am not.

First, some background on the case, fifteen year old, Lawrence "Larry" King was openly gay and also a cross dresser.  He was very flamboyant and thought nothing of chasing others boys around the school.  He relished the attention that his being out and his appearance brought him.  After making his interest in another boy obvious and public, the other boy shot King in the head twice in a computer lab at the school.  King died from brain injuries two days later.

Folks, there is a lot going on with this story, both positive and negative.  A young man being brave enough to be who he is.  Some teachers and students who support King.  An assistant principal who may have used King to advance her own agenda.  Many, many students who bullied and harassed King.  A city where the gay community is almost non-existent.  The fact that King was very provocative and sexually suggestive with his male classmates.  The behavior of a lot of people involved in this case is questionable.

Young, Gay, and Murdered

That being established, however.................................

Does any of King's behavior justify his being gunned down in cold blood by another middle schooler?  Seriously, ladies and gentlemen, think about this.  Even if King were parading himself about in front of his killer while telling the young man "You know you want me", does that justify cold blooded murder?

Thomasson certainly seems to think so.

Gay Teen Brought On His Own Murder

The audio clip in the above link is beyond repugnant.  The killer was being "harassed", so it is understandable that he would pump a couple of bullets into King's brain.  "Bad teachers" supported King to promote the "homosexual agenda".  (On a side note, I have been asking for years what the "homosexual agenda" is, but I have yet to receive an answer that wasn't an illogical homophobic rant.)  Allowing King to dress in female clothing caused "sexual tension".  Allowing students to express themselves through their dress is "social engineering".  Anti-bullying statues that include gays are "indoctrination".

This "gentleman" (and I use the term VERY loosely) is reprehensible.  His anti-gay bigotry is sickening.  His attempt to justify murder is stomach churning.

The killer in this case also had some serious mitigating circumstances in his life.  These must be considered in court, but to suggest that King's homosexuality, cross dressing, and behavior legitimize his murder is abominable!

Quite frankly, friends, I would like to see this fanatic be forced to sit and listen to first hand accounts from gays and lesbians about the bigotry and prejudicial treatment that they endure on a day to day, hour to hour, basis.  Maybe then, he could remove his cranium from his anus and realize that homophobia is criminal and that gays deserve the same rights, respect, and dignity as everyone else.

What Do You REALLY See When You Notice That Little Old Lady In The Corner?

The essay below is geared more toward nurses, but I really think it is relevant to us all.  As we go about our hectic lives, how many of us have totally ignored, or gotten frustrated at, an elderly person?  Think about this the next time you encounter a senior citizen, regardless of where you meet them or your line of work.

"What Do You See, Nurse?"

What do you see, nurse, what do you see?
What are you thinking when when you look at me?
A crabbled old woman, not very wise.
Uncertain of habit, with farway eyes.
Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice, "I do wish you'd try!".
Who seems not to notice the things that you do
And forever is losing a stocking or shoe.
Who unresisting or not, let's you do as you will
With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill.
Is that what you're thinking, is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, you're not looking at me.
I'll tell you who I am as I sit there so still.
As I move at your bidding, as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of ten with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters who love one another.

A young girl at sixteen with wings on her feet
Dreaming that soon now a lover she'll meet.
A bride soon at twenty---my heart gives a leap
Remembering the vows that I promised to keep.
At twenty-five, now, I have young of my own
Who need me to build a secure happy home.
A woman of thirty, my young now grow fast
Bound to each other with ties that should last.

At forty my young will now soon be gone,
But my man stays beside me to see I don't mourn.
At fifty once more babies play round my knee.
Again we know children, my loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead.
I look at the future.  I shudder with dread.
For my young are all busy rearing young of their own.
And I think of the years and the love I have known.

I'm an old woman now, and nature is cruel.
'Tis her jest to make old age look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles; grace and vigor depart.
There is now just a stone where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells.
And now and again, my  battered heart swells.

I remember the joys.  I remember the pain.
And I'm loving and living life all over again.
I think of the years all too few---gone so fast.
And accept the stark fact that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, nurse, open and see.
Not a crabbled old woman---look closer---SEE ME!!

An Example Of Rick Perry's Hypocrisy

According to recent media reports, wildfires have consumed 3.6 million acres of Texas since December of 2010.  To put that in perspective, it is essentially an area the size of Connecticut.  Over 700 homes have been destroyed and at least four people have been killed.  Six of the ten largest wildfires in Texas history have occurred this year.  Isn't that an interesting thought?

Here is another interesting thought.  Texas governor and GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry has cut funding for volunteer firefighters, who respond to ninety percent of all wildfires in Texas, by seventy five percent.  While the fires raged, Perry left his underfunded firefighters to fly to a Republican presidential debate at the Reagan Library where he proceeded, in his best tea party fashion, to bash "big government" while simultaneously praising "the brave men and women who put themselves in harm's way to protect Texans' lives and property" whose funding he slashed.

Wow, Gov. Perry, it must really be difficult to talk out of both sides of your mouth like that.

Conservatives act as if the government is some alien, foreign entity when the Constitution (Are you listening tea partiers?) simply says, "We the people".  The government is us.  Among its other accomplishments, the federal government has, during our history, freed the slaves, defeated Hitler, built the interstate highway system, won the Cold War, integrated the South, put men on the moon, and killed Osama bin Laden.  Perhaps the next time an al Qadea operative needs taken down, the tea party and Gov. Perry can call one of their millionaire CEO buddies out of the executive suite to complete the mission.  Maybe Mr. Perry can ask the same CEO to hop on a fire engine and respond the next time his state catches fire.

Along those same lines, during the aforementioned debate, Mr. Perry praised, and rightfully so, the Navy SEALs who killed bin Laden while, in the next breath, stating that government does not create jobs.  For whom, pray tell, does Perry think the SEALs work?  BP?
